If you’re walking the Coast to Coast, there’s a good chance your boots will carry you straight past our farm gate. Lovesome Hill Farm sits right on the route, just north of Northallerton, and we’ve been welcoming tired, happy walkers for years. Here’s everything you need to know about stopping with us.
England’s Newest National Trail
Alfred Wainwright first described his Coast to Coast walk in 1973, stitching together footpaths, bridleways and quiet lanes to cross the north of England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. It’s been a favourite with walkers ever since.
This year it finally got the recognition it deserves. On 26 March 2026, the Coast to Coast Path officially opened as England’s 17th National Trail, after Natural England invested £5.5 million in improving paths, signs and access along the way. That means better waymarking, restored paths and a long-term future for one of the world’s great walks.
The full route runs for around 190 miles, from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay on the Yorkshire coast, crossing three national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
Where Lovesome Hill Farm Fits In
After the drama of the Dales, the route drops down through Richmond and Danby Wiske and crosses the farmland between the two national parks before climbing into the Cleveland Hills. Lovesome Hill is right on that stretch, which makes us a natural overnight stop before you tackle the Moors.
It’s a gentler part of the walk, and plenty of walkers tell us it’s a welcome chance to stretch their legs on the flat, chat to the cows and enjoy the big skies. With the Dales behind you and the Moors on the horizon, you can see both ends of your journey from the farm.

Fuel for the Next Stage
Mary’s breakfasts have won awards, and Coast to Coast walkers know just how important a good breakfast is before a long day on the hills. Expect homemade breads, our own dry-cured bacon and sausages, fresh fruit and plenty of choice for vegetarians and special diets. Take a look at our food.
And yes, there will be homemade oat biscuits waiting when you arrive.
Walkers and Cyclists Welcome
We’re officially accredited as a Walkers Welcome and Cyclists Welcome property, so we understand what you need after a long day: somewhere to dry your kit, a hot shower, a comfy bed and a friendly face.
If you’re using a luggage transfer company, our stop is usually listed as Oaktree Hill, and your bags can be sent ahead to meet you here.
Life on a Working Farm
Lovesome Hill isn’t a farm in name only. John and Mary farm 165 acres of livestock and arable land, so you’ll see real Yorkshire farming going on around you. It’s the kind of stop walkers remember long after the blisters have healed.
Make It Part of a Longer Stay
If you’ve finished the walk and aren’t ready to go home, we’re well placed for exploring more of North Yorkshire. The market town of Northallerton is just down the road, and the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, the real-life home of the much-loved vet, is a short drive away. Discover more about the area.
